Annual Charlie Golf Outing Tally Is “At
Seventeen”
John Kelly
Hope Chest Senior Editor
17 years? Who’s believing that?
I reflected recently on what was happening 17 years ago as we
prepared to hold the first annual Charlie Parrilli Memorial golf outing.
George Bush was President, and a Democrat named Clinton was
campaigning to replace him. The
Bulls had recently won their 2nd NBA crown.
And as we teed off on Sept. 18, 1992, Brett Favre was just one week
away from starting his first NFL game.
Fast forward 17 years, and here we
are in 2008. Certainly much
has changed over that time, but one thing has remained constant. Come September, a group of like-minded friends will get
together for an afternoon of green grass, great golf and gregarious
giving. (Sorry for all the
“g” words, but I recently misunderstood when I thought someone had
called me an “alliterate bastard”. So
I said to myself, “I’ll show him.”
I guess I inadvertently proved him right.)
This year’s golf event will be
held on Saturday, September 27th at the Traditions at Chevy
Chase Club in Wheeling. Our
dinner and raffle is scheduled for November 15, once again at Przybylo’s
White Eagle Banquets in Niles. The
2007 dinner was a great evening, and not only because you all matched the
previous year’s $8000 donation that you had made to Boys Hope/Girls Hope
of Evanston. One of the
evening’s highlights was watching Bob Mahoney karaoke a Charlie Daniels
tune (complete with an inflatable fiddle solo).
Several people were nervous that a rendition of “The Devil Went
Down to Georgia” might be offensive in light of the Michael Vick
dog-fighting scandal, but Bob’s artful performance seemed to quell any
controversy. A “tour de
force” to be sure. (No,
Bob, that is not a
European bike race, it means… never mind, just call me.)
All this fun AND supporting a worthy
cause? How do I sign up?
Don’t worry, it’s easy!! Your
registration info will follow shortly.
Call your friends, register and reserve your spot.
As always, we sincerely thank you for helping us help others who
are in need of a friend like Charlie.
SEE YA SOON!!!
